Today, like any other, I awoke listless... to the dreary camouflage of the unexpected, that is life. If you're a quick learner, you'd have realised that I'm a creature of habit; wake up; eat food; learn at university; go home; and finally sleep once more. With the occasional tidbit of spontaneity sprinkled here and there. This spontaneity generally appearing in the form of friends. Lucky for me, today was one of the days were my routine included some substantial social interaction. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing my friends...It's just that the obligations of university life require more of me than what I can fairly distribute. In most cases university being what allures myself from leisure spent with friends... Today I was lucky and spent my breaks between classes, not working in the library, but with people who enjoy my company. This particular group are a rather rambunctious crowd, but nonetheless, are quite a pleasure to be around. This cabal includes some interesting characters, but as always to keep anonymity I'll just say that they can be compared to an 80's sitcom based around the youths of music life. But I seem to have digressed from my point.
This post won't be so much about what I did today, but what's recently peaked my interest.
I've always enjoyed reading a good adventure fantasy novel, fraught with mystery, danger, perils and horrors. Though not only reading has been an interest of mine. I think, with the writing of this blog in particular, writing is one of the obvious activities I enjoy to dabble in. Now if you combine both of these hobbies, what would you get? If you answered a basic knowledge of the english language... Well technically you're correct. But despite my pride in my literary skills the answer is a board game prevalent in pop-culture since the early 80's, known as Dungeons & Dragons. What's brought this interesting game to the forefront of my mind was a simple question one of my friends had beseeched upon me, to act as a Dungeon Master or DM for short. Yes, I know what you're thinking. And no there is absolutely no sexual aspect to it, I mean 0... Unless playing a board game was someones kink? But who's to judge.
The aim of the DM is to create the story for the players, this means they are in charge of the map; the interactions that occur between controlled and none-controlled characters; and the enemies or traps that the players face. Essentially the Dungeon Master is the 'Creator' of the games world, following very specific rules to ensure the game runs smoothly and fairly. Coming to my closing remarks. I have never in my life played this game and, with that being written, I have never even thought about controlling the entire world of said game. Until today. So now I have my own perilous adventure to partake in, as I learn the basics of being the illusionary Dungeon Master.
As I write this I have a 44 episode youtube channel teaching me the "basics" of the game...
Wish me luck. Hell know's I'm gonna need it.
A word from the dungeon master.
